Purified aloe vera polysaccharide fraction – acemannan and related glucomannans. Deep hydration and anti-inflammatory action. Pregnancy-safe.
Topical application
BLimited evidence. One RCT or several controlled studies with limitations.
Polysaccharides with confirmed hydration and wound healing. Moderate evidence.
Aloe leaf polysaccharides are a purified glucomannan fraction from the flesh of Aloe barbadensis. INCI: Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Polysaccharides. The main active component is acemannan, an acetylated polysaccharide with a mass of 50-1500 kDa. In cosmetics they work as a strong humectant with intrinsic activity. The polysaccharides form a hydrogel on the skin surface, retaining 8-10 times their weight in water. Acemannan also has anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory action – it stimulates macrophages and accelerates healing of superficial wounds and sunburns. Used in hydrating gels, after-sun products, sensitive-skin creams and post-procedure formulas. Use levels run from 0.1 to 5% (the purified fraction is significantly more concentrated than aloe leaf juice). Pregnancy safety. Skin absorption into the systemic circulation is minimal. Topically safe. Oral aloe during pregnancy is not recommended because of anthraquinones, but the polysaccharide fraction does not contain them. Skin profile. Very low irritation and allergen potential. Non-comedogenic. Suitable for all skin types, especially sensitive, dehydrated and irritated. Moderate evidence (B) – clinical data for burn healing and hydration improvement.
