Water-based centella extraction. Active madecassoside levels are lower than in alcoholic extracts.
Topical application
CWeak evidence. In vitro data, open-label studies, or expert consensus.

Centella Asiatica Leaf Water is a water fraction obtained by steam distillation or maceration of Centella asiatica leaves. Contains low concentrations of madecassoside and asiaticoside, mineral salts, and aromatic compounds. Where applied. Toners, micellar waters, soothing mists, hydrating serums. Prominent in k-beauty: SkinFood Centella Water, Skin1004 Madagascar Centella Toning Toner. In Spain appears in Sesderma Skin Renew Mist, Heliocare 360 Mineral Tolerance Fluid. Difference from extract. Active triterpenoid content (madecassoside, asiaticoside) in the water is much lower than in alcoholic or glycolic extracts – about 10-100 times lower. Use as a standalone active is limited; the value is more as a gentle carrier base. Evidence base. No direct clinical RCTs on centella hydrolate. Data are extrapolated from the extract (Bylka 2014, Brinkhaus 2000). Real clinical efficacy at cosmetic concentrations is lower than for the extract. Often paired in formula with the extract or madecassoside for amplification. Safety. CIR/SCCS confirm safety at cosmetic concentrations. Hypoallergenic, non-comedogenic. Contact dermatitis is extremely rare. Does not photosensitize. Pregnancy and lactation – safe topically. Acceptable at any stage. The hydrolate contains micro-concentrations of triterpenoids, no systemic exposure. Suitable for. Sensitive skin, post-procedure recovery (after laser, peels), rosacea, atopic dermatitis. Works better as part of a multi-active formula than as a single ingredient.
