Biomimetic phosphorylcholine polymer – a hydrating film-former that mimics the cell membrane. Pregnancy-safe.
Topical application
BLimited evidence. One RCT or several controlled studies with limitations.
Biomimetic hydrating polymer. Holds water more efficiently per gram than hyaluronic acid.
Polyquaternium-51 is a synthetic biomimetic polymer based on 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC). INCI: Polyquaternium-51. Often sold as Lipidure (NOF Corporation). In cosmetics it works as a hydrating film-former. The structure mimics cell membrane phospholipids, so the polymer adheres physiologically to the skin and does not cause discomfort. It holds water twice as efficiently per gram as hyaluronic acid. Use levels run from 0.5 to 3%. Pregnancy safety. The molecule is large and does not penetrate the skin. Skin profile. Very low irritation and allergen potential. Non-comedogenic. Suitable for all skin types, especially sensitive. Moderate evidence (B).

Polyquaternium-51 is considered safe during pregnancy at typical cosmetic concentrations. Systemic absorption through the skin is minimal.
Polyquaternium-51 suits: normal, dry, combination, oily, sensitive.
