Small amino-acid-like osmolyte. Originally isolated from halophilic bacteria in salt lakes. In skin it binds water around cellular structures and membranes, protecting proteins and DNA against UV stress and dehydration. Used in formulations for sensitive and atopic skin and in post-laser protective creams.
Topical application
BLimited evidence. One RCT or several controlled studies with limitations.
Several controlled clinical studies confirmed moisturising and anti-inflammatory effects at 0.5-2% concentrations. In atopic skin studies, ectoin improved barrier function and reduced itch. The evidence base is modest but consistent.
Ectoin is a natural osmolyte, a cyclic imino acid amino metabolite synthesized by extremophilic bacteria (Halomonas elongata) for protection against high salinity, temperature, and UV. It entered cosmetics in the 2000s via biotech production. Mechanism. Forms a hydrated "shell" around proteins and cell membranes – stabilizing them under stress. On the skin it creates an osmotic protective film, increases hydration, reduces transepidermal water loss, attenuates UV-induced inflammation and AGE formation (advanced glycation end-products). Where applied. Moisturizing creams and serums (0.5-2%), atopic-skin and couperose products, post-procedure care, nasal-dryness and allergic rhinitis sprays (Aldiamed, Allergyfree), eye drops for dry eye syndrome. Featured in La Roche-Posay Hydraphase, Bioderma Sensibio, Spanish Endocare. Evidence base. Studies (Marini 2014, Buenger 2004) showed significant improvements in hydration, barrier function, and reduction of erythema in atopic dermatitis and sensitive skin. In allergic rhinitis, ectoin spray matches topical antihistamines in efficacy with fewer side effects. Safety. CIR/SCCS confirm safety. Hypoallergenic, non-irritating, non-comedogenic. Systemic absorption through intact skin is minimal. Allergic reactions are extremely rare. Pregnancy and lactation – safe. Acceptable at any stage on any skin area. In Spain ectoin sprays are permitted in gestational rhinitis. Particularly suitable for. Atopic dermatitis, sensitive skin, rosacea and couperose, post-procedure recovery, allergic rhinitis, dry eye. A safe steroid alternative in mild-to-moderate atopy.

The Evigrade extension adds an evidence panel to Wildberries, Goldapple, Letu, iHerb, Sephora and 12 more stores. This ingredient and every other one in the product show evidence-tier, allergen risk and pregnancy/lactation flags at a glance.
Ectoin is considered safe during pregnancy at typical cosmetic concentrations. Systemic absorption through the skin is minimal.
